Monastic cells: Small rooms monks lived in are called cells

They’re called cells—monastic cells or a monk’s cell. In some traditions (especially medieval monasteries), monks slept in a communal dormitory known as the dorter (from dormitory), but in many orders each monk had a small private cell for prayer, study, and rest.
