Bedroom Vastu Rules

Vastu for bedroom design comes down to a few questions everyone asks first: which direction to sleep, where the bed goes, and which colours to use. Whether you are designing a master suite for a client or laying out your own room, this guide covers all of it.

Here is what you need to know.

Who this matters for

Designer

If you're a designer

Clients ask about bed direction in the first meeting. This reference lets you answer confidently and build it into the layout from the start, instead of reworking the plan later.

Homeowner

If you're a Homeowner

Sleeping direction is treated as one of the biggest levers in bedroom Vastu, believed to influence career growth, financial stability and overall energy levels. South is the direction most consistently linked to steady progress and prosperity. Get this right first, before worrying about colours or furniture.

Architect

If you're an Architect

Bedroom orientation relative to the plot determines window placement, ventilation, and even load distribution. Vastu alignment at the planning stage prevents expensive change orders later.

Bed position according to Vastu

Bed placement is the single most-searched Vastu for bedroom question, and for good reason: where the bed sits changes how the whole room feels and functions. Here is where to place it and what to avoid.

  • Place the bed in the southwest corner of the bedroom. This zone represents stability, making it ideal for the primary sleeping area.

  • The headboard should rest against the south or east wall. Never let the bed float in the center of the room.

  • Leave walking space between the bed and the north and east walls. This also makes the room feel more open in your 3D presentation.

  • Do not position the bed directly under a ceiling beam. If the structural plan has a beam crossing the bedroom, shift the bed to one side.

  • Avoid the coffin position where your feet point directly at the bedroom door. Clients will notice this even if they do not know the Vastu term.

Head Direction

Vastu Rating

When to Use

South

Best

Master bedrooms. Recommend as default for every project.

East

Good

Children and student bedrooms. Promotes concentration.

West

Neutral

Guest bedrooms. Acceptable when south or east is not possible.

North

Avoid

Flag in every layout review. Most common Vastu objection from clients.

Sleeping direction as per Vastu

Sleeping direction refers to where the head points while lying down. The best direction is south, which aligns with the earth's magnetic field and is the universally recommended direction for the head of the household. East is the second-best choice, especially for younger family members and students.
The direction to avoid is north. If a client's layout has the bed pointing north, this is the first thing to flag. It is the most consistently cited Vastu rule and the one most likely to come up during a client review.

A practical example

Your client shows you a 2BHK flat where the master bedroom is in the northeast corner with the bed against the north wall. The Vastu fix: move the bed to the south wall (head south) and add a wardrobe or bookshelf on the north wall to add weight to that side. You can model both options in Coohom in minutes and present the comparison in 3D.

Master bedroom position

The master bedroom should be in the southwest zone of the house. This direction represents earth energy and authority, the natural choice for the head of the household.

  • Best: southwest
  • Acceptable: south, west
  • Avoid: northeast, southeast

For architects

Lock the master bedroom into the southwest quadrant before placing any other rooms. This prevents downstream conflicts with the kitchen (southeast) and pooja room (northeast).

Mirror placement in the bedroom

Mirrors are one of the most common Vastu triggers in bedroom design. Never place a mirror directly opposite the bed. The best wall for a bedroom mirror is north or east. If the layout needs a dressing table facing the bed, suggest a mirror with a cover or a wardrobe with an internal mirror.

For designers

Check mirror placement before the meeting. A mirror facing the bed will be flagged by someone in the family. Better to catch it yourself.

Wardrobe

Wardrobe direction

  • Placement: southwest wall of the bedroom, the zone for heavy furniture and storage.

  • Doors should open toward the north or east rather than into the southwest corner.

  • Avoid a wardrobe with a mirrored front facing the bed. Use a plain front or an internal mirror instead.

  • Keep the wardrobe out of the northeast corner, which should stay the lightest, least cluttered part of the room.

Attached bath

Attached bathroom placement

  • Best zones: south, west or northwest of the bedroom.

  • Avoid the northeast corner of the room for an attached bathroom.

  • The toilet seat should not sit directly in line with the bed on the shared wall.

  • Keep the bathroom door closed when not in use, especially if it faces the bed.

What if the bedroom already faces the wrong direction?

Most builder floor plans do not account for Vastu. Here is what you can adjust without moving a wall.

  • Reposition the bed within the room so the head still points south or east, even if the room itself is not in the ideal zone.

  • If the room is in the northeast, use it for a guest or a younger family member rather than the head of the household, and keep furniture light.

  • Cover or reposition any mirror that faces the bed, rather than leaving it as is.

  • Add earthy tones (beige, brown, soft green) through soft furnishings if the room sits in a weaker zone, to offset it.

  • If a beam crosses the bed, shift the bed to one side rather than sleeping directly underneath it.

Bedroom Vastu questions

  • Are the Vastu rules different for a couple's bedroom versus a single person's room?

The core rules (southwest zone, south-facing sleep, bed away from the door) apply to any bedroom. For a couple, both partners should be able to get out of bed without climbing over the other, and a single undivided mattress is generally preferred over two mattresses pushed together.

  • What are the Vastu guidelines for a child's bedroom?

Children's rooms work well in the west or east of the home, and ideally not in the southwest, which is reserved for the head of the household. A study desk should face east or north, and brighter colours suit these rooms better than the earth tones recommended for the master bedroom.

Bedroom colour as per Vastu

Southwest master

Cream, beige, light brown, soft earth tones

Northwest guest

Light grey, white, silver

East children's room

Light green, light blue

Avoid in any bedroom

Dark red, black, bright orange
