Get one wrong and the room feels off every day without you being able to say why.Here are the numbers, then the four mistakes that break most layouts — and how to check for each one in your own room, before you buy anything.If you want to test any of this, you can do it in a room planner in a few minutes. That's the clear width for any route people walk every day. A hinged wardrobe door needs the full 900 mm and a sliding one needs almost none — that difference alone decides whether a wardrobe fits a small bedroom. And a recliner or sofa bed has to be plotted extended, not closed.Mistake 1: not counting the door's swingA door isn't a line. It's an area of floor, and nothing can sit in it.I planned a 3.6 × 4.2 m living room where the door sat on the long wall, 800 mm wide, opening inward. The first version put the sofa flat against that wall and looked completely fine — until I drew the swing arc. The arc cut 200 mm into the end of the sofa. The door would stop against the armrest.This one is invisible in an empty room, because there's nothing there yet for the door to hit. And remembering that a door exists doesn't help. You have to know how much floor it sweeps.Check your room: measure the door leaf, then draw a quarter circle from the hinge with the leaf width as the radius. Nothing goes in that wedge. If there's a socket behind the door, treat it as a warning — someone intended furniture there, and it's usually a trap.Mistake 2: routing traffic through the furnitureTraffic isn't a feeling. It's a set of lines, and you can't see them until you draw them.In the same room, the second version slid the sofa 400 mm right. The door was fixed. But now the main route — from the door to the window end of the room — ran straight between the sofa and the coffee table. Every trip across the room meant stepping through the seating area.This is the most common layout problem there is, and the usual reason a room with very little furniture in it still feels cramped. People detour without noticing they're detouring.Check your room: draw three lines on your plan — door to the main seat, door to the window, door through to the rest of the home. None should cross the seating group, and the narrowest point on each should be at least 900 mm.Mistake 3: mistaking wall length for usable wallHow long a wall is and how much of it you can use are two different numbers.The third version turned the sofa 90° onto the window wall. Traffic cleared completely. But the sofa now backed onto the window, blocking light on the only side of the room that gets any, and it sat directly in front of the radiator — blocking the heat, and over a winter, not doing the sofa any favours either.That wall is 3.6 m long and 0 m usable. A radiator takes a wall out of play as completely as a door does.Check your room: take each wall's length and subtract what's already claimed — under windows, radiators, vents, consumer units, surface pipework. What's left is the wall you actually have. Most people discover this gap on delivery day.Mistake 4: missing by a littleUnder the number is under the number. "Nearly enough" is the version you'll live with and resent.The fourth version put the sofa back on the door wall, shifted right to clear the swing. Traffic clear, window clear, radiator clear. It looked solved.Then I measured the gap between the right end of the sofa and the window wall: 680 mm. That gap was the only route to the armchair and the only way to reach the window to open it. Against 900, it's short by 220.220 mm doesn't sound like much. That's the problem — it never creates an obvious failure you'd go and fix. It just makes you turn sideways once a day for two years.I didn't estimate that number. I measured it in the plan. Because the 2D plan and the 3D view are the same dataset, when the walkway looked tight in 3D it was tight, at the number on the plan. That's the practical reason to do this digitally rather than on graph paper: the picture and the dimensions can't disagree with each other, and on paper "looks about right" has nothing checking it.The fix wasn't a different arrangement. It was a different size — the 2100 mm three-seater became an 1800 mm two-seater, giving back 300 mm and taking the walkway to 920 mm. The armchair moved into the window corner at 90° to the sofa, which turned two separate seats into a conversation pair.Check your room: measure the narrowest point of every daily route and compare each to 900. Anything under it, don't find a way to live with — find a smaller piece.Four mistakes, forty minutes, nothing boughtAll four versions happened on a plan. Run the same four in a real room and it's two sofa moves and one return.That's the whole argument for planning before executing. Everything after that gets measured on the plan — adding a cabinet next year, changing the dining table, working out whether your furniture fits the next flat before you sign for it.The plan is the tape measure you don't have to get out again.FAQWhere do you actually start? With the fixed constraints, not the furniture. Wall dimensions, door swings drawn as arcs, window positions, radiators, sockets. Then what the room has to do. Furniture is last.How much space should you leave between furniture? 900 mm / 36 in for the main path, 600 mm / 24 in for secondary gaps, 350–450 mm / 14–18 in between sofa and coffee table. Dining needs more: 900 mm behind a chair to pull it out, 1120–1220 mm if someone also walks past.Should furniture be pushed against the wall? Not where you have the choice. Pulling seating 100–150 mm off the wall reads as arranged rather than as a waiting area, and usually makes the room feel larger. In tight rooms do it for one piece rather than none.How do you lay out a long narrow room? Two zones along the length, not furniture lining both long walls — lining the walls emphasises the corridor. Use a sofa back as the boundary between zones, and run the rug across the width.How do you know a layout is wrong? Three checks. Every daily route at least 900 mm. Sight line from the door hits a front face, not a side panel. At least two seats facing each other. Failing any one of these is usually what "it feels off" means.Can you plan without measuring first? No. A 50 mm error is invisible on a sketch and decides whether a 1980 mm sofa clears a 1930 mm alcove.
